Wynn Resorts has named Boston-based Suffolk Construction Co. as the general contractor for its $1.7 billion casino project in Everett.

Site work and environmental cleanup of the 33-acre site on the Mystic River began last fall. The construction phase is expected to generate 4,000 unionized jobs with an anticipated completion date in 2018.

“Building a five-star resort that meets the Wynn quality standards requires an attention to detail that is unwavering,” Wynn Everett President Robert DeSalvio said in a statement. “Suffolk Construction shares our values and is working with us full speed to meet our groundbreaking target.”

The 3-million-square-foot casino will include 600 hotel rooms and restaurants, a spa, retail shops, a ballroom, meeting rooms and gaming space. Wynn Resorts estimates it will generate 4,000 permanent jobs.

The contract will give Suffolk Construction, the state’s largest construction firm, a lucrative new source of business following completion of the 60-story Millennium Tower Boston luxury condos this summer.

“This is a landmark project that will require a multitude of craftspeople, laborers and vendors all performing at the highest level of execution,” Suffolk Construction CEO John Fish said in a statement. “Suffolk Construction is working with the union trades to open these opportunities to veterans, minorities, women and all tradespeople across Wynn’s host and surrounding communities.”

Wynn Resorts says the casino will be the largest single-phase construction project in state history.

And in Springfield today, executives from MGM Springfield were scheduled to host a tour of their 14-acre site to give an update on the casino project and upcoming activity.

Construction crews last week began demolishing the vacant Alfred G. Zanetti School, which was damaged in the 2011 tornado that tore through the city’s South End, to make way for the $950 million casino project.

MGM officials scrapped plans for a 25-story tower in favor of a 6-story structure last year after cost estimates rose from its original $800 million figure to more than $1 billion. The casino has a projected fall 2018 opening.
