The 28 Hastings Street Corp. of Mendon has agreed to bring the public water system serving its commercial buildings located at 1 Emerson St. and 28 Hastings St. into compliance with Massachusetts drinking water regulations in a consent order signed with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).

As part of the agreement, the consent order assesses an $8,165 penalty for the violations.

During a May 2011 inspection of the property, MassDEP personnel confirmed that the on-site drinking water supply wells used to supply the buildings met the criteria for a public water system, and that 28 Hastings Street Corp. was operating an unapproved public water system. Since that time, the owners have been working with MassDEP to bring the water system into compliance with the drinking water regulations.

Water quality testing conducted to date indicates that the water sources meet drinking water standards for those parameters that have been tested. Through the consent order, the owners have agreed to operate as a public water system by providing the required water quality monitoring and system oversight. The order also requires that any future expansion or modification of the water system must be approved by MassDEP.

The corporation must pay $2,415 of the assessed penalty, with the remainder suspended as long as there are no further environmental violations over the next year.
