A 34-acre Chelmsford property that formerly housed UMass-Lowell’s west campus goes to auction on April 5.

The state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance is promoting the property as an “ideal residential development opportunity” close to highways and an MBTA Commuter Rail station. It currently contains four dilapidated buildings ranging from 4,393 to 13,557 square feet.

The site is zoned for single-family homes on 40,000-square-foot lots by right. A conceptual plan prepared for the UMass-Lowell facilities planning committee indicated that the property could be developed into 21 single-family lots.

The state is conducting tours of the property at 255 Princeton St. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 15 and 25. Zekos Group of Shrewsbury will conduct the auction at noon on April 5 at the Chelmsford town offices.

Originally developed as the Middlesex County Training School in the 1890s, the property was purchased by Wang Laboratories in the 1980s for a potential headquarters. Wang later sold the buildings to the University of Lowell. Most of the buildings have been vacant since the late 1990s.
