  • Boston printer Clarence DeMar still holds the record for the most Boston Marathon wins, 100 years after he first beat all comers running the course.
  • DeMar was an Olympian three times, and won bronze for the United States as marathoner in the 1924 games, but doctors repeatedly tried to warn him off racing due to a heart murmur.
  • “Mr. DeMarathon,” as he was sometimes called, made his living as a printer and according to records of The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman, he helped print the paper during the 1920s.

“Not only in running, but in much of life, is a sense of balance and proportion necessary.” — Clarence DeMar in his 1937 memoir, “Marathon”
