A startup researching a vaccine to reduce methane emissions generated by cattle is expanding at Charlestown’s Hood Park.

In December, Arkea Bio Corp. received $12 million in seed funding from the Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures. The company recently subleased 12,461 square feet at 500 Rutherford Ave. within the former dairy plant-turned business park, which includes another venture capital-backed agricultural researcher, Indigo AG.

The transaction enables Arkea Bio to expand rapidly into fully built-out lab space, brokerage Freudenheim Partners said. Freudenheim Partners’ Ellie Cullinan represented the tenant and JLL’s  Carolyn Wheatley and Zach Gramlich of JLL represented the sublandlord in the transaction.

The three-story 500 Rutherford Ave. contains 125,000 square feet of office and research space.
