The nation’s largest life science developer acquired the WBZ-TV studio property in Allston, where a large redevelopment including offices, labs and housing was approved in 2022 but has yet to begin.

Alexandria Real Estate Equities paid $7 million for the 1200 Soldiers Field Road property. The approved project would demolish the 76-year-old studios and construct a 62,000-square-foot production facility on another section of the property, making room for a mixed-use development including 700,000 square feet of office-lab space and an 85-unit apartment building.

Allston-based Mount Vernon Co., which paid $3.8 million for 1200 Soldiers Field Road in 2017, sold the property this week. National Development remains a partner in the redevelopment and no changes in the project are planned, Managing Partner Ted Tye said in an email.

The plans call for demolition of the 18,512-square-foot studios and construction of the replacement facility including offices and production space.

The neighborhood has attracted strong demand for multifamily and life science development in recent years, including the recent acquisition of the 2-acre Audacity radio studios at 70 Leo Birmingham Parkway in March by Burlington-based Nordblom Co.
