Align Credit Union has received approval from the Massachusetts Division of Banks to expand its field of membership into Norfolk and Suffolk counties.

Align already has members living in those counties and plans to build up memberships in the area, said Thomas Hammond, CFO and executive vice president of the Lowell-based credit union.

“We’re excited to add our products and services to a new group of members,” Hammond said.

The previous field of membership included Middlesex and Essex counties, certain municipalities within Worcester and Norfolk counties and certain municipalities within Hillsborough and Rockingham counties in New Hampshire. Membership also included workers in various telephone and communication companies.

“We had to decline a lot of members because they didn’t live within our field of membership,” Hammond said. “It will be nice to be able to service and fulfill their banking needs.”

Align plans to offer a full suite of services online to members in these counties and will consider adding a branch in Norfolk or Suffolk county in the future. If new branches are added in these areas, Hammond said, Align would open micro-branches rather than having a large footprint. Align’s existing branches are in Amesbury, Danvers, Framingham, Haverhill, Lowell, Methuen and Wilmington.

Align will roll out a digital marketing campaign to reach potential new members in the coming weeks, targeting tech-savvy individuals in the 30-45 age group who own a home or plan to purchase one soon, Hammond said.

Align Credit Union changed its name from the Northern Massachusetts Telephone Workers Credit Union in 2013. Align had about $594.9 million in assets as of June 30.
