Opening of Amazon’s recently-completed distribution center in Revere is indefinitely delayed as the online commerce giant scales back its once-torrid expansion plans.

Amazon acquired the 14-acre property at 565 Squire Road for nearly $50 million in May 2021, five months after the Showcase Cinema complex that previously occupied the site closed permanently.

Revere officials say they’ve sought details from the e-commerce company about its timing for activating the 141,000-square-foot warehouse, which was designed as a last-mile distribution center.

An Amazon spokesperson said in an email that the Squire Road facility “remains in our future plans” but did not have any specifics on timing for the facility’s opening.

The delay comes as Amazon revamps its supply chain in 20 cities including Boston by recruiting 2,500 local businesses for home deliveries, according to the news site Axios.

Amazon has canceled, closed or delayed plans for nearly 100 warehouses nationwide since September, according to data from MWPVL International cited in a Bisnow report.

Because Amazon owns the Squire Road property, it’s likely to remain part of the company’s long-range plans, Revere Chief of Planning and Community Development Tom Skwierawski said.

In a letter to the Revere City Council, Skwierawski noted that Amazon has been consolidating its local distribution network including transferring its non-grocery operations from its facility on Beacham Street on the Chelsea-Everett line to 135 American Legion Highway in Revere. The 800,000-square-foot distribution center was developed at the former Necco candy factory.

Despite the opening delay, Amazon told Revere officials it will continue to staff the Squire Road property with maintenance and security personnel, Skwierawski notified councilors.

The property is assessed at $37.6 million, according to Revere assessors’ data.
