A development team plans to restore the facade of Boston’s former Alexandra Hotel while demolishing the remaining dilapidated structure and building a new 110-room boutique hotel extending onto an adjacent vacant lot.

JB Ventures and TCR Development, led by Jas Bhogal and Thomas Calus, are proposing a 10-story hotel totaling 60,000 square feet at 631 Massachusetts Ave. and 1767 Washington St. in the South End.

The new building will include a ground-floor restaurant, roof deck and conference rooms, attorney Marc LaCasse wrote in a letter of intent filed with the Boston Planning and Development Agency.

“The development team is excited by the prospect of restoring this historic gem at this prominent corner location. Indeed, this building will once again take its place as an important landmark at the intersection of the South End and Roxbury,” LaCasse wrote.

The new structure would extend onto a vacant parcel which housed a historic brick building that was demolished because of structural issues.

The proposal is subject to the South End Landmarks District Commission review, BPDA Article 80 review, and will require zoning relief for height and density, and a variance because no on-site parking is proposed.

The property originally opened in 1875 as a 50-room residential hotel. Attempts to redevelop it stretch back decades, with the Church of Scientology acquiring the property in 2008 and proposing a renovated hotel with a Scientology bookstore and cafe on the ground floor. Amended plans to use the property and the since-demolished neighboring building as the church headquarters fell through and the church listed the property for sale in 2014.
