Two fires set at a compact living development under construction in Allston were attempted arson, according to a Boston Fire Department investigation.

On Sept. 29, firefighters responded to The Indie development at 35 Braintree St. after construction workers discovered what was initially suspected to be a bomb on an upper floor of the building.

Following a sweep by the bomb squad, investigators found an electrical wire duct-taped from a wall leading across the floor into a bundle of insulation, causing a small burn hole on the sixth floor, according to a report by the arson squad.

A second arson attempt was discovered on the first floor, where a storage cabinet was broken into and a construction vest had been set on fire.  A security camera outside the building also was damaged.

The investigation remains open pending further retrieval of video surveillance, according to the report.

Boston-based developer Jones Street Investment Partners received a $40.3 million construction loan from Cambridge Savings Bank in July 2022 for the project, which includes 147 apartments as small as 329 square feet.

The project was approved in 2021 under Boston’s since-suspended compact living policy, which encouraged smaller housing unit sizes as an affordability strategy.

The 7-story apartment building bordering the Massachusetts Turnpike originally was scheduled to begin welcoming residents in October, according to promotional materials. The Indie’s web site now says it’s leasing for early 2024 move-ins.

Jones Street Investment Partners did not respond to a request for comment.
