It’s been a tough couple of years for mortgage originators – tightening lending standards, changing regulations and shifting implementation deadlines have all contributed to a less than hospitable environment for those who write the loans. But as Massachusetts’ continued and healthy housing recovery continues, Banker & Tradesman celebrates some of the unsung heroes behind the deals that keep our spirits up and our economy moving.

The Warren Group’s second annual compilation of loan originators in the state breaks down LOs into categories of banks, credit unions and mortgage companies, by both number and volume of loans, and furthermore into geographic regions – statewide, the Cape and Islands, Eastern Massachusetts and Western/Central Massachusetts.

This year’s rankings are compiled from data from The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman, and include loans that closed in the 12 months between April 1, 2014, and March 31, 2015.

Of particular note are the credit unions in Western/Central Mass., where six women took the top 10 spots, producing a total of 683 loans with nearly $106 million in total volume. Out in the Cape and Islands, Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank almost swept the bank category, with only Mark Paul Higgins from Cape Cod Cooperative Bank breaking into the top five. The lucrative Eastern Mass. region contributed strongly to statewide totals; many of the top producers in Greater Boston were also the top producers statewide.

There are number of familiar names on the list, including Cheryl Ann Williams, USA Alliance Federal Credit Union; Vikas Selhi, Leader Bank; Julie Anne Long, Commonwealth Mortgage; Shant Banosian, Guaranteed Rate Inc.; and Harinder Singh Johar, Guaranteed Rate Inc., all of whom were top originators in last year’s rankings.

Nipping at their heels are up-and-comers Justin Scott Tulman of  Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation (number one by volume for credit unions), Marcus Jay Sohn of Leader Bank (number one by volume for banks), Kimberly A. Nourse of Rockland Credit Union (number one by number of loans for credit unions) and Thomas George Toland (number one by number of loans for banks).

Bravo to these industrious loan originators, and all their brethren across the Bay State, for all the hard work they put into helping house families across the commonwealth.
