Belmont Town Meeting members recently approved zoning necessary for a plan by Northland Development Corp. to build 150 units of senior housing on a former part of the McClean Hospital grounds.
The town acquired development rights to the 140-acre parcel in 1999 from McClean but failed to develop the envisioned senior housing. Northland Residential Corp. proposed the new development in partnership with McClean last year, according to a presentation given to town meeting members.
The project would see 40 age-restricted townhomes built in 13 buildings, plus 110 apartments in two structures: 53 age-restricted apartments and 57 non-age-restricted apartments. Fifteen percent of the townhomes would be restricted as affordable housing, while 25 percent of the apartments would be designated affordable housing. 234 parking spaces would be provided as part of the development. Amenities would include an outdoor pool as part of the apartment complex.
With the nearly-unanimous 256-6 Town Meeting vote, Northland’s project may proceed to the design and site plan review stage.
