Sunday shoppers will have more than double the room to stroll, dine and enjoy Boston’s iconic Newbury Street retail strip every week this summer as the popular program returns for its latest year.

Between July 2 and Oct. 15, Newbury Street will be closed to everyone but pedestrians every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with parking restrictions beginning at 5 a.m., according to Mayor Michelle Wu’s office.

“The Back Bay Association is pleased that Open Newbury will welcome pedestrians, shoppers, diners and visitors to Boston’s Iconic Newbury Street for more than three months of Sundays,” Back Bay Association President Meg Mainzer-Cohen said in a statement provided by the mayor’s office. “Many retailers, restaurant owners and businesses have quantified the success of Open Newbury, that led to increased sales, customer engagement and an overall creative use experience of this public way.”

On top of that, the city is also expanding its similarly popular Open Streets program to two more places – the intersection of Harvard and Brighton avenues in Allston, and Meridian Street in East Boston – on top the three that hosted events last year: Dorchester Avenue, Centre Street in Jamaica Plain and Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury.

“Last year was a reimagining of what’s possible when we think about transforming our streets, from how we connect to where we connect with each other. That’s why as part of our commitment to making Boston the best place in the country to raise a family we’re expanding our efforts this year to not only have those three successful events continue in community but to add Allston-Brighton and East Boston,” Wu said in a statement.

This year’s Open Streets events will start at 10 a.m., with streets closing at 9 a.m., and end at 3:30 p.m. The dates will be:

  • Sunday, June 25: Centre Street in Jamaica Plain
  • Saturday, July 15: Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury
  • Saturday, August 19: The Harvard Avenue-Brighton Avenue intersection in Allston
  • Sunday, Sept. 17: Dorchester Avenue in Dorchester
  • Sunday, Oct. 15: Portions of Meridian and Bennington streets in East Boston

“As a business owner in the Three Squares district, I can confidently say that the great Open Streets event hosted by the City and Three Squares last summer was a tremendous success,” Michael Soltani, owner of the Brendan Behan Pub in Jamaica Plain’s Hyde Square, said in a statement provided by Wu’s office. “It brought people together, created a vibrant and lively atmosphere, and showcased the best of what our community has to offer.”
