A three-day event – "Boston GreenFest 2011" – kicked off this week on Boston’s City Hall Plaza to provide the community an opportunity to learn about green organizations, businesses, services, jobs, ideas, products and networks from the New England area and beyond.

Exhibits include live entertainment, an eco-fashion pop-up shop, the GreenFilmFest, workshops and forums, as well as food and many fun and interactive experiences for people of all ages.

Sponsored by the city of Boston and premier title sponsor the Boston Metro as well as others, the weekend-long festival is organized by Foundation for a Green Future Inc. and runs today from noon to 9:30 p.m. and Sat. Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"Boston GreenFest continues to be one of the great, free public events in Boston that provides the community with an opportunity to learn more about the innovative and exciting sustainability work taking place throughout our region," said Menino. "GreenFest highlights efforts, both large and small, that citizens can incorporate into their everyday lives to go green and help the environment."

Boston GreenFest 2011 will highlight how festival attendees can give back to the Boston community by encouraging participants to bring recycling fabric to the event and assist in making a Boston GreenFest quilt. These quilts made from recycled fabric will then be donated to Boston-area shelters. GreenFest will also feature a photo exhibit with work from Boston Public School students of photos that highlight the natural world and environmental efforts taking place throughout Boston.

In addition to the 200-plus exhibitors of green services, products and organizations at the event, Boston GreenFest goers can buy local produce, explore the eco-friendly crafts area and check out new clean technologies and green inventions. Some of the event highlights include the EcoSalsa Fashion Show, GreenFilmFest and the One Gallon Challenge where competitors drive ultra-economical vehicles 110 miles to Boston using the energy of one gallon of gasoline.
