A pair of progressive legislators are planning a push on Beacon Hill to legalize local rent control laws.

State Reps. Mike Connolly, D-Cambridge, and Nika Elugardo, D-Boston, are planning to file legislation in the coming weeks that would allow cities and towns to impose rent control measures on landlords, according to The Boston Globe.

Voters banned rent control in a 1994 statewide referendum. At the time, only Boston, Cambridge and Brookline had local rent control ordinances. Rent control foes and many economists hold that rent control measures discourage the construction of new buildings and investment in existing rental properties.
