A Charlestown man will be charged with assault and battery and armed robbery after holding up a Santander Bank over the weekend, making a brief escape on a bicycle.
According to the Boston Police Department, John Crilley entered the Santander Bank at 437 Rutherford Ave. wearing a raincoat and mask, grabbed an employee and demanded money, claiming to have a gun. The employees gave the suspect money containing dye packs, designed to release a colored aerosol. After the suspect exited through the main entrance of the bank, he headed towards Main Street on his bike.
Shortly after, a witness was able to help police locate an individual in a raincoat on a bike near Essex Street and Tibbetts Town Way carrying a smoking object, which they suspected was the dye pack.
After reviewing video evidence, police and FBI investigators positively identified the suspect and arrested him without incident behind a relative’s house on Tibbetts Town Way.
Crilley was also identified as the culprit of another armed robbery at the A1 Variety Store the night of Sept. 27.
