LegoLand entranceA front-end loader dropped 50,000 Lego bricks on Wednesday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 44,000-square-foot Legoland Discovery Center Boston at Assembly Row in Somerville.

Scheduled to open in May 2014, Legoland Discovery Center Boston is the company’s first park in New England and will employ a staff of approximately 100. In addition to the indoor attraction, the 50-acre mixed-use development at Assembly Row will include outlet shopping, apartments, entertainment, office space and Somerville T station.

"We could not be happier welcoming Legoland Discovery Center to Assembly Row," Russ Joyner, vice president and general manager of Federal Realty, said in a statement. "It is an experience and brand that transcends age and will bring hundreds of thousands of people to Assembly Row and Somerville from across New England, enjoying all we have to offer."
