Boston-based real estate company Corcoran Jennison Assoc. has been selected by the Boston Housing Authority to redevelop and expand a 1,110-unit public housing complex in Charlestown into a 2,400-unit mixed-income community.

The proposal calls for 1,100 subsidized affordable units for existing residents and those on the housing authority’s waiting list, which would be distributed throughout the new complex alongside affordable workforce and market-rate units. The demolition and construction would take place in phases.

Corcoran Jennison, in a partnership with Irvine, California-based developer SunCal, was one of four teams that responded to a request for proposals. A selection committee rated the team highly for its history of resident partnerships and services. The design process will begin this fall with a series of community meetings and design charrettes. Residents will be given the chance to move to other BHA public housing sites or receive Section 8 vouchers, the housing authority said in a press release. Existing residents will have the right to return following completion of the project.
