A new report from real estate data firm CoreLogic shows Massachusetts foreclosure inventory stayed flat in July compared to one year ago. Overall, the commonwealth ranks 31st among all states in foreclosure rate, with 1.9 percent, or one mortgage out of 107, foreclosed.
Nationally, foreclosures fell slightly last month, with 3.2 percent of loans in foreclosure, a decline of 0.2 percent. Nearly 800,000 foreclosures were completed between July 2011 and July 2012, with by far the greatest concentration in just five states: California (118,000), Florida (92,000), Michigan (61,000), Texas (57,000) and Georgia (54,000). These five states account for 48.1 percent of all completed foreclosures nationally; Massachusetts had 7,994, according to CoreLogic’s figures.
"Completed foreclosures were down again in July, this time by 16 percent versus a year ago, as servicers increasingly rely on alternatives to the foreclosure process, such as short sales and modifications," said Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic.
