A blazing pile of building materials outside Hines’ under-construction South Station Tower set off a large response from the Boston Fire Department Tuesday morning.

According to a Boston Fire Department post on X, formerly Twitter, the fire was contained a roof deck being built at the foot of the tower, on top of the expanded South Station bus garage and paring facilities intended to serve the tower’s future office and residential tenants.

The BFD’s post said that no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Suffolk is the general contractor for the project and have halted construction for a “complete safety audit,” WCVB-TV reports.

Bystander posts on X appear to indicate the fire started shortly before 9 a.m. The MBTA’s official account posted that the fire had been put out by 10:30 a.m. and fire crews were “clearing the scene” at that time without impacting service on the Red Line subway, Silver Line bus rapid transit or commuter rail lines that terminate at South Station underneath the construction site.

The incident nonetheless generated dramatic visuals, with smoke from the roof deck fire appearing to have made its way into the tower’s unfinished interior and out through existing openings in the glass curtain wall on several floors.
