An 11,000-square-foot grocery store will open later this year in the long-vacant Social Security building in Somerville’s Davis Square.

Fresh Formats LLC filed building permit applications for the ground-floor storefront at 240 Elm St., Somerville officials said Monday. The building also contains 20,000 square feet of office space on the upper floors, part of which will be occupied by Davis Square Architects.

Fresh Formats is a division of Stop & Shop parent Ahold, a Dutch conglomerate that opened its first bfresh urban-format store in Allston last year. The plans in Somerville include an onsite bakery, prepared food to go and an emphasis on natural and organic bulk foods.
