Developer Greg Renshaw, who was instrumental in turning Putnam into an antiques destination, died Friday at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after sustaining a gunshot wound at the Cargill Falls Mill complex that he was redeveloping.
Putnam police were called to the complex at 9:18 p.m. Monday for a reported shooting. The victim, identified as Renshaw by the Norwich Bulletin, died Friday at UMass Memorial Medical Center. In a statement, the Massachusetts State Police Department described the shooting as an “isolated incident.”
Renshaw, 54, had spent more than a decade on redevelopment efforts at Cargill Falls Mill for a mixed-use complex including apartments, galleries, retail and restaurant space. The $23 million project had been delayed since November after Putnam officials objected to plans for a hydroelectric plant that would supply power to the property.
After converting 100,000 square feet of storefronts in Putnam into antique galleries in the 1990s, Renshaw sold his downtown portfolio in 2006. He acquired the 14-building Cargill Falls Mill for $273,000 in 2002 and began an environmental clean-up and obtaining financing.
