Eastern Bank’s insurance subsidiary has acquired the Newton-based BBS Employee Benefits, the agency said this week.

“We are excited to welcome BBS Employee Benefits’ employees and customers to the Eastern Insurance family,” Hope A. Aldrich, president and CEO of Eastern Insurance, said in a statement. “BBS Employee Benefits has an excellent reputation for superior customer service and products, making it a perfect cultural fit for our organization.”

BBS Employee Benefits was founded in 2002 by Frederick W. Colman Jr. Since that time, the BBS Employee Benefits team has built an outstanding agency, which is well-known for its superior service to its customers and employees, Eastern said.

BBS Employee Benefits’ office at 2000 Commonwealth Ave. in Newton will merge into Eastern’s headquarters at 233 West Central St. in Natick.

Following the merger, all current BBS Employee Benefits employees will join Eastern Insurance, serving in the same capacity as they have and ensuring a smooth transition for its clients.

For Eastern Insurance, the acquisition increases its customer base in the Newton and Greater Boston area.

Eastern Insurance is the largest insurance agency headquartered in Massachusetts and the 51st largest agency in the United States.
