The federal government announced $42 million in funding Wednesday for the Port of Boston’s shipping container terminal.

The federal money will help fund a roughly $102.9 million project for the Conley Terminal, allowing it to accommodate the larger vessels now offloading at the South Boston facility, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“Because these larger vessels require more substantial berthing facilities, the Conley terminal is undergoing greater stress with each vessel visit. The current facility has outlived its useful life and is in need of total refurbishment,” the U.S. Department of Transportation wrote in July.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx had earlier informed Congress of his intention to finance the Boston port upgrade and various other projects, giving lawmakers a required 60-day notice.

The $759.2 million in FASTLANE grants announced Wednesday will help support $3.6 billion in infrastructure investments spread across 18 projects in 15 states and Washington D.C.

In addition to making improvements to the container terminal, Massport is undertaking a project to dredge Boston Harbor, allowing for still bigger ships to make stops in Boston.
