This week, we learned that Life is good, the Back Bay-based company that sells apparel and accessories, is moving its headquarters to 51 Melcher St. in Boston’s Fort Point Channel neighborhood. We applaud the company’s plans to relocate to what’s fast becoming one of the hottest areas in Boston. It’s another well-known firm that’s made it clear it’s looking to join a neighborhood that’s home to other businesses looking for a hot location. The city should be commended for bringing in more than 4,000 new jobs and 200 new companies to the Innovation District, with potentially 2,500 more jobs on the way. Cambridge companies such as Vertex and ZipCar are moving across the river, ready to take advantage of the neighborhood.
But with more companies moving in and more areas in the neighborhood filling up with a kaleidoscope of living and dining options, a problem is beginning to emerge. Like any neighborhood, Fort Point needs more places that cater to office workers and residents alike. What about a drug store? The closest one is in South Station. What about a supermarket? You’ll have to go to Stop & Shop in South Boston. Bee’s Knees is opening soon on Farnsworth Street next to Flour Bakery, but a gourmet store with an on-site chocolatier isn’t exactly your neighborhood grocer.
Boston Mayor Tom Menino needs to make it a priority to attract other retailers to the neighborhood.
The aphorism, “If you build it, they will come,” is absolutely true, but we’re still waiting for the other integral parts of the neighborhood.
