Forum Held Tonight On Waltham Development Regulations

Waltham officials will hold a public hearing Tuesday night to discuss the effects on economic development from a program to reduce sewer inflows.

The city council’s economic development committee will hold a hearing at 6:30 p.m. for local businesspeople to discuss the city’s inflow and infiltration ordinance. Committee Chairman Tom Stanley called the hearing after receiving complaints from businesspeople about the program.

In 2004, the city entered an agreement with the state Department of Environmental Protection to reduce stormwater flows into the sanitary sewer system caused by leaky pipes. The program requires developers to either pay a fee to the city to improve their sewer capacity or to pay for other sewer improvement projects in the city.

"Businesses are an important component of our community and they should have a voice in policy that has a direct impact on them and the local business climate," Stanley said in a statement.
