General Electric is officially a Boston-based company.

The industrial conglomerate opened its new global headquarters Monday morning at 33-41 Farnsworth St. in Fort Point. Up to 200 executives are making the move from Fairfield, Connecticut and GE will occupy 60,430 square feet within the 116-year-old building, part of a portfolio acquired earlier this year for $225 million.

Gov. Charlie Baker, Mayor Martin Walsh and state and local economic development officials welcomed GE executives during a ceremony Monday morning.

“It’s like the first day of school,” CEO Jeffrey Immelt remarked, as reported in a tweet by Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Jay Ash.

GE, the world’s ninth-largest company by market capitalization, is in permitting for its new 2.5-acre permanent headquarters spanning two existing buildings and a 293,300-square-foot build-to-suit office tower overlooking Fort Point Channel.

State officials offered GE $120 million in incentives to win the competition for the company’s global headquarters after Immelt last year sought alternatives to the 42-year-old Connecticut campus.

In July, the MassDevelopment board of directors authorized the purchase of two warehouse buildings on Necco Way that will be converted into GE office and lab space, a restaurant, career center and maker spaces.

GE will acquire the warehouses from Gillette parent Procter & Gamble, sell them to MassDevelopment and lease them back, according to MassDevelopment CEO Marty Jones. GE has a purchase-and-sale agreement with Gillette for the new building site, currently used for surface parking.

The Gensler-designed campus expected to open in 2018 will employ approximately 800 employees, including 600 tech-oriented positions that will include new hires.

GE will make another presentation on the permanent headquarters during a community meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 at Atlantic Wharf.
