A new academic building at Clark University will be the Worcester school’s first to use geothermal energy as its primary heating and cooling source.

Shawmut Design and Construction began construction, this month, on the new Center for Media Arts, Computing and Design.

The four-story, 70,000-square-foot building will house the Becker School of Design & Technology at Clark University, the Department of Computer Science, and programs within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Designed by Ayers Saint Gross to attain LEED Gold certification, the building is located between Woodland and Hawthorne streets facing the Goddard Library and includes a pair of wings covered in a metal panel grid and an academic quadrangle. The facility will house virtual reality labs, a multimedia gallery, a video game library, robotics and data science labs and makerspaces, faculty offices, and a multi-floor classroom.

Completion is scheduled for fall 2023.
