A Gloucester man was sentenced yesterday in Boston federal court for a bank robbery committed while wearing the same clothes he wore in a photo posted to social media just days before.

Michael Robinson, 40, was sentenced on Dec. 4 by U.S. District Court Judge William Young to six years in prison and three years of supervised release. Robinson pleaded guilty in June to one count of bank robbery.

According to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office, Robinson entered an Institution for Savings branch in Gloucester on Nov. 19, 2018, walked up to a teller and, after passing a handwritten note, stole $2,650.

Within minutes of the robbery, local police responded to the bank, according to the statement. After reviewing bank surveillance footage, the police recognized Robinson as the robber. Police also matched bank surveillance footage of Robinson to the Facebook photo he had posted the previous weekend. In that photo, Robinson was wearing the same clothing he wore when he robbed the bank.

A few hours after the robbery, police apprehended Robinson on a bus in Lynn.
