Goodwin Procter LLPGlobal law firm Goodwin Procter LLP has finalized a lease to occupy 360,000 square feet of office space in Boston’s burgeoning Seaport district.

The firm is leasing all of the office space that will be built in the 17-story glass tower, which will contain a total of 500,000 square feet. More than 800 attorneys and other staff are expected to relocate to the new headquarters from 53 State St. in the spring of 2016.

Overlooking the city’s Institute of Contemporary Art, the new building will offer retail on the ground floor, as well as "cultural space," according to a statement from the property owner and developer the Fallon Co. Construction is expected to start early next year. The building has been designed by New York architecture firm BBGM.

The project marks a new phase of development at Fan Pier, where developer Joe Fallon just broke ground on a 14-story condominium project. And two towers totaling 1.1 million square feet that will house the global headquarters of Vertex Pharmaceuticals are nearing completion. When Fallon’s vision for the 21-acre Fan Pier on Boston’s Waterfront is fully realized, the property will comprise eight commercial and residential luxury high-rise buildings.

"As we enter the next development phase for Fan Pier, Goodwin Procter’s build-to-suit high rise will help set the tone for the future of the site," developer Joe Fallon said in a statement. "As a company, our first goal is to make sure our developments complement the surrounding neighborhood, and Goodwin’s reputation and expertise across all sectors of the law, including technology, life sciences and intellectual property, make it a perfect fit alongside other best-in-class businesses on Boston’s waterfront."

In addition to Goodwin Procter, The Fallon Co. this year finalized lease agreements with additional commercial tenants, including a pair of venture capital firms. Battery Ventures signed a seven-year lease to occupy 28,000 square feet of commercial space at Fan Pier, while Polaris Partners recently finalized plans to move its corporate headquarters to 16,000 square feet of space starting in early 2014.
