The new facility, built by Milford’s Consigli Construction Co., doubles the capacity of the food bank’s former home, which will allow it to distribute more food to its nearly 600 member hunger-relief agencies.

The new building, located in Boston’s Newmarket Business District near the South End, will accommodate 50 million pounds of food, representing a 67 percent increase over the old facility.

Consigli and architect Chan Krieger Sieniewicz in Cambridge completed the building on the site of what once was the Boston incinerator.

The facility is pursuing LEED Silver certification, and incorporates numerous sustainable components such as a solar wall, featuring a passive solar heating system, and an energy efficient refrigeration system. In addition, the building has a super insulated roof that reduces summer heat gain by 25 percent and winter heat loss by 38 percent, providing significant reductions in heating and cooling costs.
