Where: 28 Austin St., Newtonville
Built: 2018-2019

NEI General Contracting has completed construction of 28 Austin, a 68-unit modular mixed-use development built on a former Newtonville municipal parking lot.
The 4-story, 82,000-square-foot development includes 23 affordable housing units. Amenities include a lobby, lounge, fitness center, roof terrace and dog park. Retail tenants include Cafe Nero and toy store Henry Bear’s Park. A solar roof installation provides up to 50 percent of the complex’s electricity.
NEI worked with GreenStaxx, a modular consultant to the architect-of-record, to coordinate the project’s design and engineering. NEI has completed six modular projects including The Flats at 22 and 44 in Chelsea for Mitchell Properties LLC.
Financing for 28 Austin was provided by Eastern Bank and MassHousing. Nordblom Co. is responsible for property management and leasing. Other members of the project team included architect Stantec, Odeh Engineers, R.W. Sullivan, Nitsch Engineering and Ground Inc.
They Said It:
“This was a very challenging project. Building in a tight time frame on a city-owned parcel with active parking required significant coordination with the owner and city regarding parking, utilities, and road construction. NEI managed the process so the project moved forward seamlessly. We are excited to unveil these new housing options for the residents of Newton.”
