What: One Boston Wharf
Where: Boston
Owner: WS Development
Built: 2022-2024
Amazon’s new office building in Boston’s Seaport includes a Somerville clean energy startup’s climate-friendly concrete product in its 5,000-square-foot, ground-floor Paseo public promenade.
The Paseo floor will include educational materials on the role of decarbonized cement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
MIT spinoff Sublime Systems is pioneering a concrete product manufactured at room temperature, eliminating the need for high-temperature kilns that consume fossil fuels. The company plans to develop a manufacturing plant in Holyoke to expand production.
One Boston Wharf will be the largest net-zero-carbon office building in Boston at the time of its completion. The property is one of eight buildings in WS Development’s Boston Seaport portfolio that is purchasing renewable electricity from NRG Energy Inc.
Developer WS Development leased 630,000 square feet of office space at One Boston Wharf to Amazon in 2021.
They Said It:
“Buildings are monuments to the values of the people who build them, and the One Boston Wharf project represents WS Development’s leadership in ushering in our post-carbon future. They are creating not only the building but the world where people want to be.”
