What: Station Plaza
Where: 50 Prospect St., Somerville
Owner: US2
Built: 2022-2023

A Somerville landscape architect designed the first of a dozen public spaces that will be located within the 20-acre USQ project.

Station Plaza transformed a metal scrapyard into a nearly half-acre park that connects master developer USQ’s new life sciences building at 10 Prospect St., its 450-unit Prospect Union Square residential tower at 20-50 Prospect St. and the MBTA’s Union Square station.

Ground Inc., a women-owned landscape architectural firm, drew inspiration from the Millers River which once ran through the neighborhood for the plaza design including meandering pavers, a sloping green that evokes a river’s bank and a cascading amphitheater.

They Said It:

My work as a landscape architect is to set the stage for the drama of urban life. Somerville has a powerful energy and a unique ability to bring public spaces to life. We were so excited to be able to contribute this design to Union Square and we can’t wait to see it in action.”
— Shauna Gilles-Smith, founding principal, Ground Inc.
