Kaplan Construction of Brookline has broken ground on the first affordable housing complex for seniors to be built in the Upham’s Corner section of Dorchester.

Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corp. and Hebrew SeniorLife closed on financing for the 43-unit project at 9 Leyland St., which is scheduled for completion in June 2023.

Designed by Davis Square Architects, the complex will include 41 one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units for seniors earning below 60 percent of area median income. Another 24 will be supported by project-based rental vouchers, of which 11 units will be reserved for seniors earning up to 30 percent of AMI, including seniors transitioning from homelessness.

The project supports Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corp.’s goal of ensuring that Dorchester seniors can remain in the neighborhood while maintaining access to health services and social activities.

“Quality affordable housing is a fundamental component of building strong, stable communities and Dorchester Bay is proud to partner with Hebrew SeniorLife to bring much needed senior housing to the neighborhood,” Dorchester Bay CEO Perry B. Newman said in a statement.

Roslindale-based Hebrew SeniorLife, New England’s largest nonprofit provider of senior health care and living facilities, also operates properties in Revere, Randolph and Brookline.

The financing package includes participation from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Boston Office of Housing, Community Economic Development Assistance Corp., Department of Housing and Community Development, Eastern Bank & Rockland Trust Co., Enterprise Community Partners, LISC Boston, MassDevelopment Brownfields Redevelopment Fund, Massachusetts Housing Investment Corp., Massachusetts Housing Partnership, Neighborhood Housing Trust and The LIFE Initiative.
