The Kingston Collection mall is the only Massachusetts victim of Macy’s plan to close 66 underperforming stores nationwide.
The closure, announced by the retailer Friday, will see the mall drop down to one anchor store – a Target location. Its third anchor parcel was redeveloped from a former Sears location by Trammel Crow Residential as 282 apartments, called The Point at Kingston, in a complex that opened in 2023.
The mall also hosts a Regal Cinemas movie theater.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy’s Inc. Chairman and CEO Tony Spring said in a statement.
Macy’s is attempting to reorient its store footprint away from its traditional, large-footprint stores towards smaller locations with a narrower selection of products that changes more rapidly to keep up with younger shoppers’ tastes.
The Macy’s closures come as Kohl’s also announced plans to close a Massachusetts store, a stand-alone store at 501 Technology Center Drive in Stoughton, plus 26 other underperforming locations nationwide.
“We always take these decisions very seriously,” Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury said in a statement. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
