Following the Boston Red Sox, decision to shutter its Lowell Spinners minor-league affiliate team, city officials hope renovating the team’s former ballpark can help lure a new team back.

Lowell officials issued a request for proposals Friday for engineering and design services to perform a feasibility study for renovations to LeLacheur Park that would bring the property near the city’s downtown up to Minor League Baseball standards.

Built in 1998, officials say the 5,000-seat stadium needs a raft of updates, from its irrigation and drainage systems to the clubhouses and concessions areas.

The city had previously hired JLL to oversee the project, the Lowell Sun reported.

Prominent locals have voiced fears that a lack of a professional sports team in downtown Lowell in addition to UMass Lowell teams like the River Hawks hockey team will reduce local tourism and developer interest in the city.

The Red Sox have stated their interest in working with city officials to explore how to bring another team to the city.
