A Malden woman was arrested last week and charged with stealing Social Security benefits while working at Eastern Bank.

Materesa Jose, 52, was charged on Aug. 19 in Boston federal court with one count of theft of public funds and one count of bank embezzlement, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office.

According to the indictment, Jose, while an employee at Eastern Bank, stole approximately $27,605 from the bank between September 2017 through July 2018. Some of the funds included Social Security benefits. The indictment alleges that Jose stole the Social Security benefits on a recurring basis and that she initiated unauthorized withdrawals from a customer’s account.

Theft of public funds provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of either $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater. The bank embezzlement charge provides for a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater.
