As concern over the COVID-19 coronavirus grows, businesses are realizing they may need to develop plans to keep functioning even while many of their employees have to stay home to avoid contracting the illness from crowded places like offices and subway cars.

Remote working is not new, even among small businesses. It’s hard to find definitive statistics on how many people work remotely. Gallup’s most recent survey in 2016 showed that 43 percent of employees worked remotely in at least some capacity; that was up 4 percentage points from 2012.
