Massachusetts’ top prosecutor is concerned about the growth of criminal enterprises as the state’s first casino is poised to open.
State Attorney General Maura Healey urged gambling regulators in a recent letter to develop strong regulations to combat money laundering, human trafficking, the illegal drug trade and other illicit activities that might seek to gain a foothold in Massachusetts.
A Massachusetts Gaming Commission spokeswoman tells The Associated Press the panel, which meets Thursday, is still reviewing the letter.
Massachusetts’ casino industry launches in earnest with the June opening of a Penn National Gaming slot parlor on the Rhode Island border.
Two major resort casinos are also in development in western Massachusetts and the Boston area.
Healey, a Democrat who took office in January, had campaigned as an anti-casino candidate.
