Jean Yang, the executive director of the Health Connector who oversaw the troubled rollout of the state’s health exchange website over a year ago, will step down this month, paving the way for Governor-elect Charlie Baker to choose her successor.

Yang, who took over the top job at the Health Connector in January 2013, announced Tuesday she would leave the agency on Jan. 16. Maydad Cohen, the governor’s special assistant who oversaw the rebuild and launch of a new Connector health insurance purchasing website in November, will be named interim director.

"I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead the Health Connector through the transition to the Affordable Care Act," Yang said in a statement. "We faced difficult challenges but more people have insurance today and more people can get help paying for that insurance than before the ACA, and that is what matters."

Yang previously worked as chief financial officer of the Health Connector.
