The Massachusetts Division of Banks has named its top lawyer as acting commissioner of the agency after former Commissioner Terence McGinnis left the agency Friday, a division spokesperson said yesterday.

Merrily Gerrish, deputy commissioner and general counsel at the agency, will serve as acting commissioner until a permanent replacement is found for McGinnis.

The agency has yet to provide a specific reason for the departure of McGinnis, who served for a little more than two years, making him the shortest serving commissioner since 1994.

Gerrish joined the division in 2013, according to her Facebook page, and like McGinnis has a background in corporate banking law. Before working at the division, she was an attorney at Fleet Bank, BankBoston, Bank of America and at the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
