Massport CEO Lisa Wieland will leave her post after a four-year stint leading the agency that owns Logan International Airport and commercial real estate parcels in South Boston, Charlestown and East Boston.

Director of Aviation Ed Freni was named interim CEO by the Massport board of directors. Wieland succeeded Thomas Glynn as Massport CEO in August 2019, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted air travel and forced the agency to slash its payroll by 25 percent to cover a $400-million budget deficit.

“Because of our amazing team, we restored activity across our business lines, delivered strong financial performance, and invested in strategic initiatives to position the Authority for future success and contribute to the Commonwealth’s economic development, transportation and climate goals,” Wieland said in a statement released today.

Wieland has been in talks with utility National Grid for an executive position, the Boston Globe reported last month.

At its July meeting, the Massport board discussed a potential 6 percent raise in Wieland’s base compensation and a 10 percent performance bonus. Wieland’s compensation totals $417,609 this year, according to a Boston Herald report.

Even with the increases, Wieland’s salary would be below that of similar multimodal agencies, members of the board’s compensation committee said.

Along with Logan International Airport, Massport owns the Worcester Regional Airport and Hanscom Field in Bedford, where developers are proposing 27 new hangars at 154 Hartwell Road to expand private jet service.

In its real estate landlord role, the agency is preparing to offer a 3-acre site at the Massport Marine Terminal property in South Boston for a potential 200,000-square-foot commercial-industrial development.

Wieland has been a Massport employee since 2006, and was the port director from 2015 until her appointment as CEO.
