Mayor Thomas M. MeninoJust call him Professor Menino.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has landed himself a gig as the co-director of Boston University’s new Institute on Cities.

First reported by WBZ’s Jon Keller, Menino, who’s also known as the "Urban Mechanic," will help to launch the new institute, according to The Boston Globe.

"We want to be the place people go when it comes to urban issues," Menino said Tuesday in an interview with the Globe. "We’re starting now, but in a few years we want to be the leading university when it comes to urban America."

The Globe reports that Menino, who is the longest-serving mayor in Boston’s history, has agreed to a five-year contract with BU, but will not be teaching any courses.

The university and Menino were expected to formally announce the news at a press conference Wednesday morning. The Globe reports that Menino will leave office Jan. 6 and is expected to start Feb. 1 at BU.
