Low-income communities don't benefit as much from selling solar back to the grid.

A partnership with Boston-based FireFlower Alternative Energy will generate 35 percent of the electricity consumed onsite at Milton’s Fuller Village independent living retirement community.

The 358-kilowatt rooftop solar array will be installed on nine buildings at the Brush Hill Road property, covering nearly an acre of rooftop space. The system will generate 430,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year. According to an EPA calculator, the system’s capacity will reduce greenhouse gases as much as taking 1,630 cars off the road annually.

Marlborough-based MassAmerican Energy will design and install the system.

Founded in 2008 by Kathleen Doyle, a founding partner at commercial real estate brokerage GVA Thompson Doyle, FireFlower provides turnkey solar installation services to businesses, organizations and municipalities in the northeastern U.S.
