Westchester Modular Homes of Greater Boston (WMHGB) is expanding its market into the Springfield area, to provide an additional reconstruction option to the area ravaged by damage from tornadoes.

The Saugus-based firm had been considering an expansion into Western Massachusetts for some time. WMHGB CEO Scott Jones said the company plans to offer its services to assist homeowners looking to rebuild from the recent damage.

Jones said the expansion is aided by his company’s partnership with Westchester Modular Homes, a factory in Wingdale, N.Y., which has the capacity to manufacture housing in its climate-controlled factory around the clock.

Modular construction is factory-built, shipped in "modules," and assembled on site, usually in a day. Interior finishing takes longer, but the start-to-stop time for modular construction is approximately half the time of traditional or "stick built" construction. Jones, who also heads the traditional James V. Caggiano & Son construction firm in Lynnfield, said that there has been a marked increase in demand for modular construction, which prompted him to create the second company in 2010.

WMHGB plans to offer seminars in the region on the benefits of modular construction, and they will also offer area residents the chance to tour their factory in Wingdale to see the actual construction process.
