A new study has ranked New Bedford as one of the top five worst cities in the country for first-time homebuyers.

New Bedford placed 296th out of 300 U.S. cities for first-time homebuyers, according to a WalletHub study. The study analyzed the affordability of homes, the conditions of the real estate market and community environment in the 300 largest U.S. cities to determine its rankings.

Quincy ranked the highest of any Massachusetts city, placing 225th on the list. Boston tied with Fresno, Calif. for the 233rd spot.

Lowell ranked at 230th, Cambridge at 249th, Worcester at 265th, Brockton at 273rd and Lynn at 285th.

Broken Arrow, Okla. was named the best city for first-time buyers, according to the study. Allen, Texas; Norman, Okla.; Denton, Texas and Frisco, Texas closed out the top five, respectively.

While the South Central U.S. dominated the top five best cities for first-time homebuyers, cities in California and New Jersey found themselves at the bottom of the pack.

Richmond, Calif. was named the worst city in the U.S. for first-time buyers, placing 300th. Newark N.J. placed 299th; Salinas, Calif. ranked 298th; and Paterson, N.J. placed 297th.
