Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer Boston architecture firm Payette has received two design awards for its work at hospitals in Palmer and Pennsylvania.

The company was rewarded for its work on the 60,000-square-foot surgical and
inpatient addition at Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer and the 182,000-square-foot Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, located on the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Campus in Hershey, Penn.

The Wing Memorial Hospital Surgical and Inpatient Addition provides a clinical expansion for the community-based hospital. The first floor includes three operating suites for general surgery, two endoscopy/minor procedure rooms and a 16-bay peri-operative unit. Inpatient care beds were consolidated on the second floor.

Since completion of the new addition, there have been overall improvement to operational workflow and a significant increase to patient/staff satisfaction, according to a statement. Furthermore, Wing Memorial has become the fastest growing community hospital in the region.

The Boston Society of Architects (BSA) Healthcare Facilities Design Award program’s sole judging criterion is design excellence. The jury examines how design excellence is informed by aesthetic, functional, contextual, sustainability, social and other characteristics.

The Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute project was recognized by the BSA for its success as a new translational medicine typology, in which research and clinical functions are strategically mixed to encourage collaboration between the two, according to a statement.

"A green healthcare approach restores the basics of light, space and air to hospital programming, and integrating landscape elements into the design of new spaces is an important positive attribute to a patient’s experience," said Kevin Sullivan, principal of Payette. "We applaud Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute for pursuing this type of environment for its patients and staff, and are grateful to the BSA for recognizing this achievement."
