PNC Bank has selected a former restaurant on the Back Bay’s Boylston Street as the site of its first Boston retail branch.

The Pittsburgh-based bank has requested permission from its regulator, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, to open a branch at 729 Boylston St. The bank had announced plans this summer to open retail branches in four cities, including Boston.

The branch will be located across from Lord and Taylor between Exeter and Fairfield streets. Owned by Linear Retail, the site had been the long-time home of Uno Pizzeria and Grill, which closed late this summer.

PNC plans to open more branches in the Greater Boston area, initially focusing within Route 128, said Roger Wallace, PNC’s vice president of corporate communications. He added that the bank expects most people in the region would eventually be within a 15 to 20 minute drive of a branch.

Wallace did not have a time frame for when the Boylston Street office would open. The bank has submitted renderings of the new space by GDP Group to the city of Boston.

PNC has had a long-time presence in Boston, Wallace said, with about 125 employees in the area. The bank earlier this fall had announced Two International Place as the new site of its regional headquarters. Some of the Boston staff will move to the new headquarters, which will have space for about 100 employees. The headquarters are expected to open within the second quarter or the summer, Wallace said.
