Boston officials have approved the city’s first recreational cannabis dispensary for a commercial building located less than a block from North Station.

Ascend Massachusetts said it received a conditional use permit to open the city’s first adult-use cannabis retailer at 272 Friend St.

New York-based Andrus Group, which has managed construction projects for retailers including Apple and Tesla, will oversee construction of the “unique and engaging” multistory dispensary, Ascend said. Completion is scheduled for late 2019, subject to approval by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.

The 5-story brick building previously was occupied by the Hilton’s Tent City camping supply store, which relocated to Cambridge’s Central Square last year.

Ascend Massachusetts’ CEO Andrea Cabral is the former sheriff of Suffolk County. The company is a subsidiary of Ascend Wellness Holdings, which recently closed a $40 million round of equity funding to expand in Massachusetts, Michigan and Illinois, including three locations in Greater Boston. The funding was led by Poseidon Asset Management, Salveo Capital, JM10 Partners and Shire Capital Advisors.
